Title: Influence of Parton k_T on High-p_T Particle Production

Abstract: We report on recent work concerning the phenomenology of initial-stateparton-k_T effects in direct-photon production and related processesin hadron collisions. High-mass direct-photon and \pi^0 pairs areused to explore the impact of parton-k_T on kinematic distributions. After a brief summary of a phenomenological k_T-smearing model, wepresent a study of recent results on fixed-target and colliderdirect-photon production. This approach provides a consistentdescription of the observed deviations of next-to-leading order QCDcalculations relative to the inclusive direct-photon and \pi^0 data.We also comment on the implications of these results for theextraction of the gluon distribution of the nucleon.
